Day 1: Arrive Hanoi (N/A)

Hanoi, a city of contrasts, is a captivating destination that combines modern and traditional elements, blending chaos and serenity, and always surprises.

At Noi Bai Airport, driver and tour guide will pick you up and transfer to your hotel for check-in. You will have free time to relax after a long flight.

Day 2: Hanoi City Tour Full-day (B, L)

After breakfast at your hotel, your tour guide will pick you up at 8:30 AM to visit the sixth-century Tran Quoc Buddhist Pagoda by serene West Lake.

Next, head to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, founded in 1076 to educate the monarchy and elite over an impressive 800 years.

You’ll then choose a museum to visit that day:

  • Option 1: The Vietnamese Women’s Museum, showcasing cultural diversity and the vital role of women in Vietnam.
  • Option 2: The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (closed on Mondays), which highlights the cultural heritage of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups through interactive exhibits.

After the museum, enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

Post-lunch, visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex. While the site is impressive, be prepared for some walking (note that the Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and each afternoon from June 12th to August 14th).

Walk past the Mausoleum to learn about Ho Chi Minh’s life and legacy, then visit the ‘stilt house’ where he lived from 1958 to 1969 (also closed Monday and Friday). Stroll through the peaceful gardens before heading to the One Pillar Pagoda, built in 1049, a unique symbol of Hanoi.

In the afternoon, explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter, wandering through the bustling streets of the ’36 guilds’ and discovering hidden gems of local life.

To wrap up the day, enjoy the ancient art of water puppetry at the famous Water Puppet Theater.

Finally, your guide and driver will drop you back at your hotel for an overnight stay in Hanoi.

Day 3: Hanoi – Overnight train to Lao Cai (B, L)

At 8:30, after having breakfast, the tour guide will take you through Hanoi’s backstreets, passing by homes, schools, streetside markets, and alleyways. You’ll see historic landmarks like the Old Quarter, Opera House, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Huu Tiep lake, John MC Cain monument, and An Duong market. You’ll also explore an island with fertile soil, flooding each year during the rainy season. The final stop is the Long Bien Bridge, once the longest bridge in Asia, built over a century ago and famous during the ‘American war’.

Take photographs or selfies whenever you get the opportunity. The open door / top jeep will provide plenty of photo chances.

Wrap up the day with specialties of Hanoi: Egg coffee or a quintessential Hanoi dish; Bun Cha (pork noodles). Discuss with your guide in advance, the best option for your day.

In the afternoon, return to the hotel (late checkout is arranged until 18:00).

In the evening, meet your guide, who will help you with a private transfer to Hanoi Railway Station for an overnight train to Lao Cai.

The Flower Hmong are the most frequent visitors, although the Phu La, Black Dao, Tay, and Nung hill tribes also gather here. The market provides a variety of locally produced things that are not accessible elsewhere, including an odd animal market featuring pot-bellied pigs, cows, and buffaloes. Continue your adventure with a little walk to a hill-tribe community.
